It’s hard to believe that I have lived in Seattle since 1986 and never explored downtown Sultan on my way to Steven’s Pass.! Today I decided to explore this original “railroad town” where I purchased a small canvas print for our kitchen for $14.95. The Main Street shop, Flat Iron Gallery, has been in business for 45 years. They once relocated the store to highway 2, according to owner, Susan Green, but it’s now back on Main Street, thanks to Federal Grant money awarded to Sultan approximately 10 years ago for the purpose of revitalizing it’s Main Street. I also happened to meet the Mayor of Sultan, Carolyn Eslick, who plans to open a GROW Washington office on the corner next to the Flat Iron Gallery . Mayor Eslick is pictured here in front of the future GROW Washington location. GROW Washington is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a bright future for small businesses and entrepreneurs in Washington state. Carolyn has already opened one GROW office in Snohomish, Washington. Visit their store or http://www.growwashington.biz for details.

I decided to start this blog on September 11th to commemorate those Americans who lost their lives on this tragic day, 11 years ago, and to create a community to help rebuild small town main streets, businesses and communities “one purchase at a time”.
My hope with this blog is to encourage friends and neighbors to LEAVE the Interstate, drive PAST the Walmart and SHOP at stores located on small town Main Streets, then SHARE your experience here: the amount you spent, which town’s Main Street you supported and whether the product you purchased was made in the U.S.A.
